Company intelligence / Profile preview
U.S. Healthcare was a pioneering health maintenance organization (HMO) that significantly influenced the managed care landscape in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s. Founded by Leonard Abramson, the company specialized in providing comprehensive, network-based health insurance plans designed to control costs while maintaining quality of care. In 1996, U.S. Healthcare was acquired by Aetna in a landmark $8.9 billion merger, creating Aetna U.S. Healthcare. This acquisition marked a major strategic shift for Aetna, moving it away from traditional indemnity insurance toward a managed care model. Today, its legacy continues within the health benefits division of CVS Health, which acquired Aetna in 2018.
