Velcura Therapeutics was a biotechnology company focused on the discovery and development of novel small molecule drugs to treat bone-related diseases and musculoskeletal disorders. The company's core technology centered on identifying compounds that stimulate the body's natural bone-forming cells, or osteoblasts, to promote the growth of new bone tissue. This anabolic approach was designed to address conditions like osteoporosis and complex bone fractures by actively restoring bone mass rather than simply slowing its loss. Founded as a spin-out from the University of Michigan, Velcura utilized a proprietary high-throughput screening platform to evaluate the effects of compounds on human bone cells. Its lead candidate, VEL-02, was developed for the treatment of osteoporosis and reached Phase 1 clinical testing before the company eventually ceased operations.
