Velgene Biotechnology

Velgene Biotechnology was a South Korean biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of innovative gene therapies and molecular diagnostics. Established in 1997, the company specialized in adenovirus-based vectors for treating various forms of cancer, including oncolytic virus candidates targeting telomerase-expressing cells. Velgene was recognized as a leader in the early Korean biotech industry, contributing significantly to the country's research infrastructure for genomic medicine. In 2004, the company merged with ViroMed (now Helixmith) to create a more robust entity with a diversified portfolio of DNA, protein, and viral-based therapeutics. This strategic consolidation allowed for the integration of Velgene's adenoviral expertise into Helixmith's broader clinical development programs.
