Velvet Antler Research New Zealand

Velvet Antler Research New Zealand (VARNZ) was a research joint venture between AgResearch and Deer Industry New Zealand (DINZ), established in 1994 to investigate the biochemical composition and therapeutic potential of New Zealand deer velvet antler. The organization provided a scientific foundation for traditional medicinal uses through modern clinical and biochemical research, focusing on immune modulation, wound healing, joint health, and athletic performance enhancement. Through extensive trials, VARNZ identified active components such as Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and specialized proteins, leading to the development of standardized extracts and commercial products like RepaiRx. Although the legal entity was deregistered in 2022, its scientific contributions continue to underpin the quality standards and global marketing efforts of the New Zealand deer industry. The research legacy of VARNZ remains a cornerstone for the validation of velvet antler as a high-value natural health product.
