Company intelligence / Profile preview
VeraSun Energy was a leading American producer of renewable fuel, specifically fuel-grade ethanol and its co-product, distillers grains. Founded in 2001 and based in Brookings, South Dakota, the company grew to become one of the largest ethanol producers in the United States with a significant network of production facilities across the Midwest. At its peak, VeraSun was a major player in the industrial biotechnology sector, focusing on large-scale fermentation processes to convert corn into biofuel. The company went public in 2006 but faced severe financial distress due to volatile commodity prices, leading to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2008. Its production assets were eventually sold to Valero Energy and other entities in 2009, marking the end of its operations as an independent entity.
