Vestar, Inc. was a pioneering biotechnology company specializing in the development of liposomal drug delivery systems to enhance the efficacy and reduce the toxicity of therapeutic agents. The company is most notable for developing AmBisome (liposomal amphotericin B), a gold-standard treatment for severe systemic fungal infections and visceral leishmaniasis. Vestar's technology focused on encapsulating drugs within lipid bilayers to improve their pharmacological profile. In 1994, Vestar merged with NeXagen to form NeXstar Pharmaceuticals, which was subsequently acquired by Gilead Sciences in 1999. The company's legacy continues through the widespread clinical use of its liposomal formulations.
