VI Technologies

VI Technologies, also known as VITEX, was a biotechnology company dedicated to improving the safety of blood transfusions through pathogen inactivation technologies. Its core platform, INACTINE, was designed to eliminate viruses, bacteria, and parasites in various blood components using the small molecule PEN110. The company's lead program reached Phase 3 clinical trials for red blood cells but encountered significant regulatory and clinical challenges. In 2005, VI Technologies merged with Panacos Pharmaceuticals, a company focused on HIV fusion and maturation inhibitors, effectively ending its independent operations in blood safety. The combined entity eventually shifted its focus entirely toward Panacos's antiviral pipeline.
