Via Medical

Via Medical was a medical technology company that specialized in automated point-of-care diagnostic systems for the critical care market. The company's primary innovation was the Via V-750 Blood Gas and Chemistry Monitor, which provided continuous, bedside monitoring of essential blood parameters including pH, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and glucose. By automating the sampling process through a patient's existing arterial line, the system significantly reduced the need for manual blood draws and minimized iatrogenic blood loss, a critical factor in neonatal care. The technology aimed to improve clinical decision-making by providing real-time data to healthcare providers in intensive care units. In 2001, Via Medical was acquired by International Technidyne Corporation (ITC), a subsidiary of Thoratec Corporation, for approximately $15 million. The acquisition integrated Via's monitoring technology into ITC's portfolio of bedside testing and blood management products.
