Village Health Works

Village Health Works (VHW) is a non-profit healthcare organization providing comprehensive medical services and social support in rural Burundi. Founded by Deogratias Niyizonkiza, the organization operates a premier health center in Kigutu that serves a catchment area of over 200,000 people. VHW is currently expanding its clinical footprint with the construction of the Kigutu Hospital and Women's Health Pavilion, which aims to provide specialized surgical and maternal care. Their model integrates high-quality clinical services with community-based programs in education, food security, and economic development to address the root causes of illness. The organization is recognized for its community-led approach to global health equity in one of the world's most resource-constrained settings.
