Company intelligence / Profile preview
Viragen was a biopharmaceutical company specializing in the development of protein-based therapeutics, particularly natural and recombinant interferons. The company's flagship product, Multiferon, was a multi-subtype natural human interferon alpha that received regulatory approvals in several countries for treating malignant melanoma and other conditions. A significant portion of Viragen's research was dedicated to its proprietary avian transgenic technology, designed to manufacture complex proteins efficiently within chicken eggs. This platform, known as OvaSystem, was developed in collaboration with the Roslin Institute in Scotland. Despite its clinical and technological progress, Viragen struggled with funding and eventually entered liquidation in 2007. Its core assets, including Multiferon, were subsequently sold to other pharmaceutical entities.
