Viratek

Viratek was a biotechnology company primarily known for its role in the development and commercialization of the broad-spectrum antiviral drug ribavirin (Virazole). Operating as a subsidiary of ICN Pharmaceuticals, the company focused on nucleic acid chemistry and antiviral research. Its flagship product, ribavirin, became a standard of care for chronic Hepatitis C when used in combination with interferon and is also used for treating respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in infants. The company was instrumental in establishing the clinical utility of nucleoside analogs in treating viral hemorrhagic fevers. Viratek was eventually fully integrated into ICN Pharmaceuticals in 1994, which later evolved into Bausch Health.
