Virginia Blood Services

Virginia Blood Services (VBS) was a prominent non-profit organization dedicated to providing blood and blood products to hospitals and patients across Central Virginia. For over 40 years, the organization operated numerous donation centers and mobile blood drives to ensure a stable and safe blood supply for the region. VBS specialized in the collection, testing, and distribution of whole blood, platelets, and plasma, supporting critical needs in trauma care, surgery, and oncology. In 2018, as part of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine (ITxM), VBS merged into a national network and rebranded as Vitalant. Today, it continues its mission as part of one of the largest independent nonprofit blood service providers in the United States.
