Virginia Cardiac Surgery Quality Initiative

The Virginia Cardiac Surgery Quality Initiative (VCSQI) is a non-profit consortium of cardiac surgery programs and hospitals across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Founded in 1994, the organization focuses on improving the quality of care and containing costs for cardiac surgery patients through a collaborative, data-driven approach. VCSQI maintains a comprehensive database that combines clinical data from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) with financial data to benchmark performance and identify best practices. The initiative serves as a model for regional quality improvement, fostering transparency and cooperation among competing medical institutions to enhance patient outcomes in cardiovascular medicine. It currently represents nearly all cardiac surgery centers in Virginia, facilitating the sharing of outcomes and process improvements.
