Company intelligence / Profile preview
ViroPharma was a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing therapies for rare diseases and serious unmet medical needs. The company's flagship product, Cinryze (C1 esterase inhibitor), was the first FDA-approved treatment for the routine prophylaxis of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in adults and adolescents. ViroPharma also marketed Vancocin for Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea and advanced a pipeline of antiviral candidates, including maribavir for cytomegalovirus. In early 2014, the company was acquired by Shire PLC for approximately $4.2 billion to bolster Shire's rare disease franchise. Following Shire's subsequent acquisition by Takeda in 2019, ViroPharma's legacy products and research programs are now part of the Takeda portfolio.
