ViroTarg

ViroTarg was an Australian biotechnology company established as a spin-out from the University of Newcastle to commercialize oncolytic virus research. The company's core technology centered on Coxsackievirus A21 (CVA21), a naturally occurring virus that selectively infects and lyses cancer cells by binding to specific receptors like ICAM-1 and CD55. ViroTarg's intellectual property was acquired in 2006 by Psiron, which subsequently rebranded as Viralytics to focus entirely on the oncolytic virus platform. Viralytics was later acquired by Merck & Co. (MSD) in 2018 for approximately $394 million, integrating the lead candidate Cavatak (gebasaxturev) into Merck's global oncology pipeline. The lead asset has been evaluated in multiple clinical trials for indications such as melanoma and lung cancer, often in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors. ViroTarg's pioneering work in viral immunotherapy laid the foundation for one of the most significant biotech exits in Australian history.
