Virus Research Institute

Virus Research Institute (VRI) was a biotechnology company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that specialized in the discovery and development of novel vaccines and vaccine delivery systems. Founded in 1991 by Dr. William Haseltine, the company focused on mucosal immunity and proprietary technologies such as the Adjumer polyphosphazene adjuvant and the VibrioVec bacterial vector platform. VRI's most notable achievement was the development of a live-attenuated oral rotavirus vaccine, which was licensed to SmithKline Beecham (now GSK) and eventually became the blockbuster vaccine Rotarix. The company completed an initial public offering in 1996 and was acquired by T Cell Sciences in 1998 to form AVANT Immunotherapeutics, which later merged with Celldex Therapeutics. VRI's research also encompassed vaccines for influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and genital herpes, often in collaboration with major pharmaceutical partners like Pasteur Merieux.
