Company intelligence / Profile preview
Visible Genetics was a pioneering biotechnology company based in Toronto, Canada, that specialized in the development of automated DNA sequencing systems for clinical diagnostics. The company is best known for its OpenGene system and the TRUGENE HIV-1 Resistance Test, which was the first DNA sequencing-based diagnostic to receive FDA clearance. This technology allowed healthcare providers to identify specific genetic mutations in the HIV virus that confer resistance to antiretroviral drugs, enabling more precise treatment selection. Beyond HIV, the company applied its sequencing expertise to other infectious diseases, including Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B. In 2002, Visible Genetics was acquired by Bayer Diagnostics to enhance its portfolio of molecular testing products. The acquisition integrated Visible Genetics' sequencing capabilities into Bayer's global diagnostics business.
