Company intelligence / Profile preview
VisiGen Biotechnologies was a genomics company focused on developing a high-speed, low-cost DNA sequencing platform. The company's core technology utilized real-time, single-molecule sequencing based on Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) between a modified DNA polymerase and nucleotides. This approach was designed to significantly increase sequencing throughput while reducing costs compared to traditional methods, aiming for the "thousand-dollar genome." In 2008, VisiGen was acquired by Life Technologies (now part of Thermo Fisher Scientific) for approximately $20 million. Following the acquisition, its intellectual property was integrated into Life Technologies' next-generation sequencing portfolio.
