Company intelligence / Profile preview
Vitality Re is a long-standing program of health insurance-linked securities (ILS), often referred to as "health catastrophe bonds," sponsored by Aetna (a CVS Health company). Launched in 2010, the program utilizes a series of special purpose insurers domiciled in the Cayman Islands to provide Aetna with collateralized reinsurance coverage against extreme increases in its medical benefit claims ratio (MBR). Each annual issuance (e.g., Vitality Re XVII) transfers a portion of Aetna's health insurance risk to capital markets investors, thereby enhancing Aetna's capital efficiency and protecting against tail risks such as severe pandemics. The program is recognized as a pioneering application of securitization within the healthcare industry to manage financial volatility related to medical claims.
