Vitarine Pharmaceuticals was a New York-based pharmaceutical company that specialized in the development and manufacturing of generic prescription drugs. The company is primarily known for its central role in the 1989 generic drug scandal, which involved the bribery of FDA officials and the submission of fraudulent data to obtain drug approvals. Its most significant product was a generic version of the diuretic Dyazide, which was eventually withdrawn from the market following the discovery of manufacturing irregularities. The scandal led to a major overhaul of the FDA's generic drug approval process and the passage of the Generic Drug Enforcement Act of 1992. Vitarine filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1991, and its assets were subsequently acquired by Eon Labs.
