Vitatene

Vitatene was a Spanish biotechnology company specializing in the production of natural carotenoids through advanced microbial fermentation processes. Based in León, the company utilized the fungus Blakeslea trispora to manufacture high-quality beta-carotene and lycopene for the food, beverage, and dietary supplement industries. Vitatene was notable for being the first company to receive Novel Food approval in the European Union for beta-carotene derived from this specific fermentation method. In 2010, the company was acquired by DSM (now dsm-firmenich) to bolster its portfolio of natural nutritional ingredients. Today, its technology and facilities continue to contribute to the global supply of sustainable, natural antioxidants.
