Vivisimo was a specialized enterprise search and information optimization software company that became a key player in healthcare informatics and life sciences data management. Founded in 2000 as a spin-off from Carnegie Mellon University, the company developed the Velocity platform, which utilized advanced document-clustering algorithms to organize search results into intuitive categories. The company's technology was notably selected by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to power the search functionality for MedlinePlus and the NLM website, facilitating public and professional access to vast biomedical databases. Vivisimo also served major pharmaceutical companies and government agencies, helping them navigate and analyze complex structured and unstructured data. In 2012, the company was acquired by IBM to bolster its big data analytics portfolio and support the development of the IBM Watson platform.
