Vyteris Holdings was a medical technology company that specialized in active transdermal drug delivery systems using its proprietary SmartPatch technology. The SmartPatch platform utilized iontophoresis, a process that uses a low-level electrical current to deliver drugs through the skin into the bloodstream. The company's lead product, LidoTrans, was the first active transdermal patch to receive FDA approval, designed to deliver lidocaine and epinephrine for local anesthesia. Beyond pain management, Vyteris developed programs for the delivery of peptides for infertility and small molecules for migraine treatment. Despite its innovative technology and regulatory success, the company faced financial difficulties and eventually ceased active operations following a merger in 2011.
