Alfa Wassermann was a prominent Italian pharmaceutical company founded in 1948 by Marino Golinelli and headquartered in Bologna. The company specialized in the research, development, and commercialization of therapeutic products primarily in the fields of gastroenterology, vascular medicine, and orthopaedics. Its most significant achievement was the discovery and development of rifaximin, a non-absorbable antibiotic that became a global standard for treating various gastrointestinal conditions. In 2015, Alfa Wassermann merged with Sigma-Tau to form Alfasigma, creating one of the largest pharmaceutical groups in Italy. The legacy of the company continues through Alfasigma's extensive portfolio of prescription and self-medication products.
