Alfa Wassermann was a prominent Italian pharmaceutical company headquartered in Bologna, specializing in the research, development, and commercialization of therapeutic products. The company was best known for its gastrointestinal portfolio, particularly the development of rifaximin, a non-systemic antibiotic used for hepatic encephalopathy and irritable bowel syndrome. In 2015, Alfa Wassermann initiated a merger with Sigma-Tau, another leading Italian pharmaceutical firm, to create Alfasigma. This strategic consolidation aimed to strengthen its global presence and R&D capabilities across various therapeutic areas, including vascular and orthopedic health. Today, the legacy of Alfa Wassermann continues under the Alfasigma brand, which remains one of the largest pharmaceutical groups in Italy.
