Wellcome Biotech

Wellcome Biotech was the specialized biotechnology and vaccine division of the Wellcome Foundation, formally incorporated as a subsidiary in 1982. The company was a global leader in vaccine production, particularly for poliomyelitis and foot-and-mouth disease, utilizing advanced deep-tank fermentation techniques. It was also responsible for the development and production of Wellferon, one of the first therapeutic interferon products, and Digibind, a life-saving treatment for digoxin toxicity. Based at the historic Langley Court site in Beckenham, UK, the company represented the cutting edge of biologics research in the late 20th century. In 1995, Wellcome Biotech was integrated into Glaxo Wellcome following Glaxo's acquisition of Wellcome plc, and its legacy continues within the global vaccines business of GSK.
