Company intelligence / Profile preview
Wellcome Diagnostics was a leading international provider of medical diagnostic kits and reagents, originally operating as a division of the Wellcome Foundation. The company was a pioneer in the field of infectious disease testing, notably producing some of the first commercially available assays for HIV and Hepatitis B. Based in the United Kingdom, it served global clinical laboratories and blood banks with its Wellcozyme and Thrombo-Wellcotest product lines. In 1990, the division was sold to Murex Corporation as part of Wellcome's strategic shift to focus on core pharmaceutical research. Murex was later acquired by Abbott Laboratories, which integrated the Wellcome technology into its global diagnostics business. Today, the legacy of Wellcome Diagnostics remains a foundational part of modern blood screening and infectious disease diagnostics.
