Company intelligence / Profile preview
Wellcome Research Laboratories was the primary research and development division of Burroughs Wellcome & Co., a pioneering pharmaceutical company founded in London. The laboratories were renowned for their rigorous scientific approach, leading to the discovery of numerous essential medicines, including treatments for malaria, leukemia, and gout, as well as the first antiviral drugs. Notable scientists such as Henry Dale, Gertrude Elion, and George Hitchings conducted Nobel Prize-winning work within these facilities. Following a series of mergers, the entity became part of Glaxo Wellcome in 1995 and subsequently GSK in 2000. The organization was historically unique for its ownership by the Wellcome Trust, which reinvested profits into medical research. Its legacy remains a cornerstone of modern pharmacology and drug development methodology.
