Western Cape Blood Service

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is a non-profit regional health organization responsible for collecting, processing, and distributing blood and blood products across the Western Cape province of South Africa. Established in 1938, it operates numerous fixed and mobile donor clinics to maintain a safe and sufficient blood supply for both public and private hospitals. The organization performs rigorous screening and testing for transfusion-transmissible infections, including the use of Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT), to ensure patient safety. Beyond collection, WCBS provides specialized laboratory services such as immunohaematology and tissue immunology. It plays a critical role in the regional healthcare infrastructure, supporting emergency medicine, oncology, and surgical procedures.
