Company intelligence / Profile preview
WestLB (Westdeutsche Landesbank) was a major European commercial bank based in Düsseldorf, Germany, that served as a critical financial pillar for the burgeoning European life sciences industry during the 1990s and early 2000s. While not a biotechnology company itself, WestLB's specialized investment banking arm, WestLB Panmure, was a leading advisor and underwriter for numerous high-profile biotech IPOs on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange's Neuer Markt. The bank maintained a dedicated life sciences team that provided deep sector expertise, equity research, and venture capital funding to emerging drug discovery and diagnostics firms. WestLB was instrumental in the early financing rounds and public listings of industry leaders such as Qiagen, MorphoSys, and GPC Biotech. Following the global financial crisis of 2008, the bank faced significant losses and was eventually restructured and dissolved in 2012.
