Whitby Pharmaceuticals was a specialty pharmaceutical company based in Richmond, Virginia, that operated as a subsidiary of Ethyl Corporation. Established in 1989, the company focused on developing and marketing products for pain management, respiratory health, and pediatrics. Its product portfolio was anchored by well-known brands such as the analgesic Lortab and the asthma medication Theo-24. In 1995, the company was acquired by the German firm Schwarz Pharma for approximately $100 million to serve as a platform for its U.S. expansion. Following the acquisition, Whitby's operations were integrated into Schwarz Pharma, which was later acquired by UCB in 2006. The company is remembered for its role in the specialty branded generic market during the 1990s.
