Whitby Research

Whitby Research was a pharmaceutical research and development company based in Richmond, Virginia, that operated as a subsidiary of Ethyl Corporation. The company focused on the development and commercialization of small molecule therapeutics, with a particular emphasis on pain management, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular health. Its product portfolio featured several widely recognized medications, including the analgesic Lortab and the bronchodilator Theobid. In 1995, Whitby was acquired by the German pharmaceutical company Schwarz Pharma for approximately $100 million to serve as its primary U.S. operating base. Following this acquisition, the company's assets and operations were integrated into Schwarz Pharma, which was eventually acquired by UCB in 2006.
