Company intelligence / Profile preview
Winthrop Arzneimittel was a prominent German pharmaceutical company that specialized in the production and distribution of generic medications. Operating as a subsidiary of Sanofi (formerly Sanofi-Aventis), it served as the group's primary generics brand in Germany for several decades. The company's extensive portfolio included affordable versions of essential medicines across therapeutic areas such as cardiology, neurology, and pain management. Following Sanofi's acquisition of the Czech generics firm Zentiva in 2008, Sanofi began a strategic consolidation of its European generics business. Consequently, the Winthrop brand was largely phased out and its operations were integrated into the Zentiva organization by 2011. Today, Winthrop is considered a legacy brand within the Sanofi and Zentiva histories.
