Winthrop Chemical Company

Winthrop Chemical Company was a prominent American pharmaceutical firm established in 1919 as a subsidiary of Sterling Products to manage the American assets of the German company Bayer following World War I. The company became a major player in the mid-20th century pharmaceutical industry, known for producing essential medicines such as the anti-malarial Atabrine, the anesthetic Novocain, and the analgesic Demerol. Throughout its history, Winthrop maintained complex ties with the German conglomerate I.G. Farben, which influenced its research and production capabilities. During World War II, the company played a critical role in the mass production of synthetic anti-malarials for the Allied forces. Eventually, the company was integrated into Sterling Drug, and its legacy continues through the various acquisitions that led to its business units becoming part of Sanofi.
