World Wide Web Consortium

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is the primary international standards organization for the World Wide Web, responsible for developing protocols and guidelines that ensure the long-term growth of the Web. Founded in 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee, the W3C develops essential web technologies including HTML, CSS, and XML. Although it is not a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company, the W3C maintains a Health Care and Life Sciences (HCLS) Interest Group. This group focuses on the implementation of Semantic Web technologies to facilitate data integration and interoperability across the medical, pharmaceutical, and biological research sectors. In 2023, the W3C transitioned from a university-hosted model to an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
