Wuhan Pharmathene Pharmaceutical was a joint venture established in Wuhan, China, primarily focused on the development and commercialization of biodefense countermeasures. The company was formed to leverage recombinant protein technologies for the production of Protexia, a recombinant human butyrylcholinesterase (rBChE) intended to treat organophosphate nerve agent poisoning. Following the merger of its parent company, Pharmathene, with Altimmune in 2017, the joint venture's operations were largely phased out or integrated into the parent's broader strategy. The entity served as a strategic vehicle for accessing the Chinese market and manufacturing capabilities for specialized biopharmaceutical products.
