Wyandotte Chemical

Wyandotte Chemicals Corporation was a prominent American chemical manufacturer based in Wyandotte, Michigan, formed in 1943 through the merger of Michigan Alkali Company and J.B. Ford Company. The company is highly significant to the life sciences for its invention and commercialization of Pluronic polyols, a class of non-ionic block copolymers now widely known as poloxamers. These materials became essential surfactants, stabilizers, and drug delivery vehicles used extensively in pharmaceutical formulations and biotechnology applications, such as cell culture media. In 1969, the company was acquired by the German chemical giant BASF, which integrated Wyandotte's operations to significantly expand its presence in the North American market.
