XShares Group was a financial services and investment management firm based in New York that specialized in innovative exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The company gained prominence in the mid-2000s for its 'HealthShares' series, a suite of ETFs designed to provide targeted investment exposure to specific sub-sectors of the healthcare and life sciences industries. These funds were organized around vertical therapeutic areas, such as oncology, cardiology, and respiratory diseases, rather than broad market indices. By offering these 'micro-sector' products, XShares Group aimed to allow investors to hedge or speculate on specific advancements in medical technology and drug development. Despite the novel approach, the firm struggled with low assets under management and the broader impact of the 2008 financial crisis. Consequently, XShares Group liquidated its entire HealthShares fund lineup in late 2008 and early 2009, leading to the dissolution of the company's primary operations.
