Z-Mexico is a specialized biotechnology manufacturing company and a subsidiary of Mapp Biopharmaceutical that focuses on the production of plant-derived biopharmaceuticals. The company utilizes a process known as molecular farming, which involves using Nicotiana benthamiana plants as bioreactors to express complex recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies. Z-Mexico gained international prominence for its critical role in the production of ZMapp, an experimental triple-monoclonal antibody cocktail used to treat Ebola virus disease during the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak. The facility provides the large-scale agricultural infrastructure necessary to grow plant biomass containing therapeutic candidates, which are then harvested and purified for clinical use.
