Company intelligence / Profile preview
Zeneca Plant Science was the agricultural biotechnology division of Zeneca, a major British bioscience company formed in 1993 following the demerger of ICI. The company was a pioneer in the development of genetically modified crops, focusing on traits such as improved shelf-life, enhanced nutritional content, and better processing characteristics. Its most notable commercial success was the development of a genetically modified tomato puree, which became the first GM food product sold in the United Kingdom. In 2000, Zeneca's agrochemical and plant science business merged with Novartis Agribusiness to form Syngenta, a global leader in agricultural technology.
