Drug intelligence / Profile preview
α-melittin is a modified peptide derived from melittin, the primary component of honeybee venom. This engineered peptide is designed to mitigate the non-specific cytotoxicity and hemolytic activity associated with native melittin, while enhancing its therapeutic potential and targeted delivery, often through nanoparticle formulations. It is currently under investigation as an anticancer agent, particularly for glioblastoma. Its mechanism of action involves impeding the Wnt/β-Catenin signaling pathway, which subsequently leads to the induction of apoptosis and pyroptosis in glioblastoma cells. This targeted approach aims to inhibit tumor growth and overcome drug resistance with reduced toxicity to normal brain tissue.
