Overview

α-Methylacetylfentanyl is a synthetic opioid analgesic and a structural analog of fentanyl. It acts as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor, producing effects similar to those of fentanyl, including potent analgesia, euphoria, sedation, and significant risk of respiratory depression. Like other fentanyl analogs, it has been associated with severe toxicity and fatal overdoses. α-Methylacetylfentanyl was briefly sold illicitly in the early 1980s before being classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in many jurisdictions due to its high abuse potential and lack of accepted medical use[2][3][4]. Its synthesis is similar to that of α-methylfentanyl but uses acetic anhydride instead of propionic anhydride[2][4].
