Overview

The β-adrenergic cocktail is a diagnostic research tool used to evaluate cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) function in vivo. It is composed of three active ingredients: atropine (a muscarinic antagonist), aminophylline (a phosphodiesterase inhibitor), and isoproterenol (a β-adrenergic agonist). When administered via intradermal or subcutaneous injection, the cocktail induces CFTR-dependent sweat secretion (C-sweat), which serves as a biomarker for CFTR activity. This specific formulation was utilized in mechanistic studies led by Richard Barry Moss to assess the effects of CFTR modulators, such as ivacaftor, on wild-type CFTR function in healthy adults and CF carriers.
