Drug intelligence / Profile preview
β-aminoisobutyric acid (BAIBA) is a naturally occurring non-protein amino acid and myokine (or exerkine) produced by skeletal muscle during physical exercise, primarily through the catabolism of L-valine (yielding L-BAIBA) and thymine (yielding D-BAIBA). It acts as a signaling metabolite that regulates lipid and glucose metabolism, promotes the browning of white adipose tissue, enhances hepatic fatty acid oxidation, and protects osteocytes from oxidative stress-induced cell death. It is widely marketed as a dietary supplement (often under the brand name MitoBurn) for weight management, thermogenesis, and metabolic health. Clinical and preclinical studies have also investigated its potential in obesity, cardiometabolic syndrome, and bone loss, though recent clinical trials show limited efficacy in humans.
