Overview

(R)-Fluoxetine is the R-enantiomer of fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. Fluoxetine is used to treat major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, bulimia nervosa, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. The drug works by inhibiting the presynaptic reuptake of serotonin in the brain through high affinity for serotonin transporters (5-HT transporters), thereby increasing synaptic levels of serotonin and improving mood and anxiety symptoms. Fluoxetine was originally developed by Eli Lilly and has been marketed under several brand names including Prozac and Sarafem[1][2][4][5][6][8].
