Overview

Mexiletine is a small molecule antiarrhythmic drug belonging to the class of phenol ethers. It is a chiral compound and the (R)-enantiomer of mexiletine. Mexiletine acts primarily as a sodium channel blocker in cardiac tissue and is used for its membrane-stabilizing properties to treat ventricular arrhythmias. The compound inhibits sodium influx during depolarization of cardiac cells, thereby reducing abnormal electrical activity in the heart. Mexiletine has also been investigated for other indications such as neuropathic pain but its primary use remains in cardiology[1][2][4].
