Overview

(R)-propafenone is an enantiomer of the antiarrhythmic drug propafenone. It functions as a sodium channel blocker and an inhibitor of the ryanodine receptor (RyR2). While propafenone is a mixture of (R)- and (S)-enantiomers, (R)-propafenone has been investigated for its potential to treat atrial fibrillation. Studies suggest that purified (R)-propafenone may be more effective than (S)-propafenone for the treatment of atrial fibrillation, and that (S)-propafenone may reduce the efficacy of (R)-propafenone when administered as a mixture.
