Drug intelligence / Profile preview
(S)-butane-1,3-diol is the S-enantiomer of butane‑1,3‑diol—a small organic molecule classified as a secondary alcohol and diol. It is a colorless liquid with two alcohol functional groups and is water-soluble. The compound has been used in pharmaceutical research as an experimental agent and serves as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of various compounds including pharmaceuticals. Pharmacologically, racemic 1,3-butanediol exhibits sedative and hypoglycemic effects comparable to ethanol; the R-enantiomer appears more active than the S-form. Fatty acid esters of 1,3-butanediol have been studied for their ability to induce ketogenesis[4][5]. The compound also finds use in flavoring agents and cosmetics[6][8].
