Overview

(S)-methoprene is a synthetic insect growth regulator and juvenile hormone analog used primarily as a larvicide in pest control. It acts by mimicking natural juvenile hormones in insects, thereby disrupting their development and preventing them from maturing into reproductive adults. Unlike conventional insecticides that kill through toxicity, (S)-methoprene interferes with the life cycle of target pests such as mosquitoes and fleas by blocking metamorphosis at the pupal stage. This mechanism makes it effective for public health mosquito control programs, agricultural protection of food commodities, veterinary flea treatments for pets (often in combination with adulticides), and water treatment to prevent mosquito breeding[1][3][6][8]. The compound belongs to the sesquiterpenoid class of organic compounds[2].
