Drug intelligence / Profile preview
0.45% sodium chloride + 5% dextrose is a hypotonic intravenous solution used for maintenance fluid therapy. In the clinical trial conducted by the Hospital General de Niños Pedro de Elizalde (NaCrICh study), this formulation was evaluated as a maintenance fluid in critically ill children to compare its effect on serum sodium levels against isotonic fluids (0.9% NaCl). The solution provides 77 mEq/L of sodium and chloride along with 50 g/L of dextrose, providing both electrolyte replacement and a source of calories. The primary concern addressed in the study was the risk of hospital-acquired hyponatremia, a common complication in pediatric patients receiving hypotonic fluids due to the non-osmotic release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH).
